2000:SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEARContender: Bradley Wiggins
Age: 32 Sport: Cycling
Became the first British man to win the Tour de France, and then went on to claim the fourth Olympic gold medal of his career.
Wiggins made the leader's yellow jersey his own from early on in Le Tour's gruelling 20-stage, 2,173-mile race. His victory in the men's time trial at London 2012 gave him a record-equalling seventh Olympic medal for a British sportsman.
What he said: "It had to be gold today or nothing. What's the point of seven medals if they're not the right colour?" -
1958:SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEARContender: David Weir
Age: 33 Sport: Athletics
The wheelchair racer, nicknamed 'Weirwolf', won a clean sweep of four gold medals at his home Paralympics. He dominated the T54 category, winning the 800m, 1500m, 5,000m and marathon titles to give him a career total of 10 Paralympic medals.
Earlier in the year, he triumphed in the wheelchair race at the London Marathon for a record-equalling sixth time - matching Baroness Tanni Grey Thompson.
What he said: "In the marathon, people were howling as I went past and wearing 'Weirwolf' masks. It was just a great atmosphere." -
1956:SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEARContender: Sarah Storey
Age: 35 Sport: Cycling
Storey's Paralympic career reached new heights in London as she added four cycling titles for a British record-equalling total of 11 gold medals.
Her overall total of 22 medals is as many as the Olympic record held by swimmer Michael Phelps and come from two sports. She previously won five golds in swimming before switching to cycling for the 2008 Games.
What she said: "I can't quite believe that I've been so lucky to win in my home country with my home crowd." -
1954:SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEARContender: Ellie Simmonds
Age: 18 Sport: Swimming
Won two Paralympic swimming golds in London to add to the two titles she secured as a 14-year-old four years earlier.
Simmonds broke her own world record to win the SM6 200m individual medley final, just two days after gold in the S6 400m freestyle. She also won silver in the S6 100m freestyle and bronze in the S6 50m freestyle.
What she said: "The crowd going mental definitely pushes you on and gives you that home advantage you need." -
1952:SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEARContender: Andy Murray
Age: 25 Sport: Tennis
Murray ended Britain's 76-year wait for a British major tennis champion with victory in an epic US Open final against Novak Djokovic.
Two months earlier, the Scot was beaten in the men's final at Wimbledon by Roger Federer, but reversed that result to win Olympic gold and also picked up a mixed doubles silver with partner Laura Robson.
What he said: "It is what I have been working towards for the last 10 years of my life. It means the world to me." [After winning the US Open] -
1950:SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEARContender: Rory McIlroy
Age: 23 Sport: Golf
A stunning eight-shot victory at the US PGA Championship was the second Major of McIlroy's career and made him the youngest player to achieve that feat since Seve Ballesteros.
He then featured in Europe's Ryder Cup comeback victory over the United States and also topped the money lists on both sides of the Atlantic, to secure the world number one spot.
What he said: "I did want to go out there and prove a few people wrong." -
1948:SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEARContender: Sir Chris Hoy
Age: 36 Sport: Cycling
Two cycling titles in London gave Hoy a British record six Olympic golds in all - one more than rowing great Sir Steve Redgrave.
Having won on the first night of the track cycling in the men's team sprint, Hoy's emotional triumph in the keirin was the perfect velodrome finale for Team GB.
What he said: "I can't put into words what it means to me. It's one of the greatest feelings I have ever had." -
1946:SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEARContender: Katherine Grainger
Age: 37 Sport: Rowing
It was a case of fourth time lucky for Grainger as she finally gained an Olympic rowing gold medal after three silvers at successive Games.
She and Anna Watkins surged to victory in the final of the women's double sculls for their 23rd consecutive win. Grainger became the first female British athlete in any sport to win a medal at four successive Olympics.
What she said: "It's the people's medal. I've felt so many people behind me who have wanted it as much as I have". -
1944:SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEARContender: Mo Farah
Age: 29 Sport: Athletics
Won golds on successive Saturday nights, becoming the first Briton - and only the seventh man in history - to win both the 5,000m and 10,000m at the same Olympic Games.
Farah, whose "Mobot" celebration was mimicked by sprint champion Usain Bolt, also became the first man to successfully defend the European 5,000m title. His wife Tania gave birth to twin girls just weeks after the Olympics finished.
What he said: "Those two medals are for my two girls that are coming. They're twins so there's one for each." -
1942:SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEARContender: Jessica Ennis
Age: 26 Sport: Athletics
Set three personal bests in the seven events as she swept to gold in the Olympic heptathlon.
Her total of 6,955 points was 306 ahead of German silver medallist Lilli Schwarzkopf and victory kick-started a golden hour for British athletics with subsequent victories for long jumper Greg Rutherford and runner Mo Farah.
What she said: "The atmosphere when you walk into that Olympic Stadium, it's like someone gave you 10 cups of coffee. I was pumped up so much." -
1940:SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEARContender: Ben Ainslie
Age: 35 Sport: Sailing
Clinched his fourth straight gold medal to become the most decorated Olympic sailor in history.
Ainslie, who also won a silver in 1996, was driven to success after the tactics of his rivals upset him and overtook Dane Paul Elvstrom's record of four golds that had stood since 1960.
What he said: "They've made me angry and you don't want to make me angry." -
1938:SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEARContender: Nicola Adams
Age: 30 Sport: Boxing
The flyweight fought her way into the history books when she became the first woman to win an Olympic boxing title.
Despite two previous world championship final defeats by her opponent Ren Cancan, Adams overcame the Chinese fighter 16-7 in the gold medal bout.
What she said: "I just like being the normal Nikki Adams - walking the dog, doing day-to-day things. It's probably going to change but I'm going to try to stay like that." -

Stoke striker Michael Owen says: "[Chelsea interim manager] Rafael Benitez is defensive minded. We [while at Liverpool] played his Valencia team and never looked at so many blank faces. I couldn't find any space, the midfielders couldn't pass the ball. It was hard to find space against his team. I'm not sure where Chelsea are going if they're looking at [former Barcelona manager] Pep Guardiola as their end game - [both managers are] chalk and cheese."

"It's at the Excel Arena [in London] this year 16,500 spectators this year it will be a massive celebration of sport right through the evening, a real good review first, a longer show than normal to try and cope with the magnitude of the year." -

1810:SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAROlympic legend Sir Steve Redgrave sat on the panel to decide the SPOTY shortlist.
Before joining the panel, the rower said: "To limit it to 12, on the first time we've ever had a 12 as its normally a top 10, is going to be extremely difficult but it's great to have some athletes as part of the panel as well as some people from the BBC and some journalists."
Athlete Denise Lewis was also on the panel and added: "It's a real honour to be part of the Sports Personality judging team in such a huge year where there have been so many highlights and so many fantastic performances. The public expects an overwhelming top 12 and hopefully we'll get it right.
"There are a lot of great sportsmen and women that deserve to be in that top 12 that might just not make the cut." -
1805:FOOTBALLCardiff City manager Malky Mackay says he will not allow midfielder Peter Whittingham to leave the club during the January transfer window.
Several Premier League clubs are interested in the 28-year-old, but Mackay told BBC Radio Wales Sport: ""He's got to feel he's wanted here and is part of something that's growing here.

1750:CANOEINGOlympic silver medallist Campbell Walsh announces his retirement.
The 35-year-old won silver in the K1 at the Athens Olympics in 2004 and competed at the 2008 Beijing Games but was not selected for this year's London event.
"I'd said for a few years that I would most likely retire at the end of 2012," said Walsh. -

1733:TENNISFormer world number four Robin Soderling wants another crack at life on the ATP Tour but admits he may not win his battle with glandular fever, which has forced the Swede to miss the last one and a half years.
"In the past couple of months I had my best weeks and days, which gives me the hope, but I get setbacks and feel worse again," he said.
"Overall it's getting better but I'm not as desperate to come back any more tomorrow. I will give it a shot, of course, but I learned to live with the thought that maybe it will not be possible." -

1657:RUGBY UNIONWales assistant coach Rob Howley condemns New Zealand forward Andrew Hore's behaviour as "an absolute disgrace" after he was involved in a flashpoint which left Wales lock Bradley Davies out of the autumn internationals.
The second-minute incident two days ago left Davies with severe concussion and no chance of being involved when Wales face Australia in Cardiff next weekend.
