Here are today's Gunners stories from the Sunday Mirror and Sunday People...

Howay, Howedes!

Arsene Wenger has moved to correct Arsenal's defensive problems by stepping up an interest in Benedikt Howedes, writes Neil Moxley in the Sunday People.
The Gunners watched the German World Cup defender help Schalke to an impressive 4-0 win at Stuttgart last week.
Howedes, 26, has two years left on his current deal with the Champions League last-16 qualifiers. But he is a friend of current Gunners centre-back Per Mertesacker and his versatility would be welcomed by Wenger.
Howedes is equally at home at left-back or centre-half and, with a fee approaching £15million, would be well within Arsenal’s budget.

Arsenal 4-1 Newcastle

The Gunners fans chanted: "One Arsene Wenger" as Arsenal eased themselves to a much needed victory over Newcastle.
Yes, really.
A week ago, Arsenal fans were shouting abuse at Wenger and his players after they lost at Stoke.
Fast forward seven days and they're back in love with Wenger again.
Maybe it's time the Arsenal fans made up their minds and appreciated what Wenger has done for the club as they pulled themselves back towards the top four.
Arsenal took a 15th minute lead when Alexis Sanchez's cross picked out Giroud and the French centre forward powered a brilliant header into the top corner.

Andy Dunn opinion: Everyone will persevere with Wenger

No-one was thanking Arsene Wenger for the memories, no-one was waiting to give him pelters at a train station.
As far as I could see, no-one was aiming a right-hander at a co-Gunner.
The banner-makers can save their cloth, the abusers their breath and the fighters their energy.
Protests have always been futile, minor uprisings pointless.
Wenger will finish in his own sweet time.
And this showed why that will be tolerated in these title-less Arsenal times. Tolerated in the boardroom, in the ex-players’ lounges, in most of the seating, in most of the media.
There is always HOPE with Wenger.

Gunners close to Romulo

Arsenal have moved closer to signing Spartak Moscow midfielder Romulo, according to the Sunday Express.
The Brazilian is a defensive midfielder who could be seen as a long-term replacement for Mikel Arteta, with James McCarthy from Everton also touted for that role.
At 24-years-old, he is about to enter the prime of his career, where he has won nine caps already for his country.
It is thought that a swap deal involving Yaya Sanogo could be part of a potential move.

Krys-tal clear intentions

Arsenal have submitted a bid to sign Krystian Bielik, the player dubbed as the 'Polish Patrick Vieira', according to Polish publication Legia Sport.
The 16-year-old only joined Legia Warsaw six months ago for a fee of £9,500, but now could demand a six-figure fee.
Bielik and his family have reportedly visited London to see the Emirates Stadium and the Gunners' training facilities. They will also watch Arsenal face Queens Park Rangers on Boxing Day.
It is believed that a transfer could be completed by the middle of January.

Big transfer hint

Michael Regan
Possible move: Winston Reid could be the man to come in during January
Arsene Wenger gave the biggest hint yet that he will sign a defender in the January transfer window after the team's 4-1 win over Newcastle.
When asked about the transfer market, he told Sky Sports that his side does require a new face to help cover for the constant injuries which they have suffered.
He said: "Well yes, with Laurent Koscielny's injury we're a bit cautious and we need cover."
Arsenal have been linked with a move for Winston Reid, while a big money move for Mats Hummels could also be on the cards.

What position does Arsene Wenger need to sign a player for in January?
