Ashley Young has hailed Robin van Persie's return to form ahead of Manchester United's weekend showdown with arch rivals Liverpool.United can make it six wins in a row in the Premier League and compound Liverpool's misery at exiting the Champions League by beating them at Old Trafford.
Van Persie's double in United's 2-1 win over Southampton on Monday kept Louis van Gaal's side moving in the right direction, even if the performance was poor.
But United midfielder Young hailed Van Persie's finishes at St Mary's as “brilliant” and said the Dutchman's goals were vital to continue United's push up the table.

Groin injury rules Smalling out until Christmas
Chris Smalling is out until Christmas with the groin injury he suffered in the Reds' win over Southampton.Smalling came off after 18 minutes in United's win at St Mary's amid fears he could he facing a lengthy spell out with the muscle tear.
But a scan has revealed the injury is not as bad as first feared, although Smalling will miss the next fortnight.
That means the England defender will miss Sunday's visit of Liverpool, as well as the trip to Aston Villa on December 20, although he could be back to face Newcastle at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.

Former United captain Nemanja Vidic is set for a sensational move back to Old Trafford, reports the Daily Star.The Serbian defender has struggled to settle in Serie A after leaving United for Inter Milan in the summer.
Vidic made 300 appearances for United during his eight-and-a-half year spell with the club and his return would bolster Louis van Gaal's depleted defensive options
City seal Strootman for United?
Kevin Strootman's long rumoured move to United could eventually materialise after his Roma side were knocked out of the Champions League by Manchester City, reports the Independent.Manuel Pellegrini's men defeated last season's Serie A runners-up at the Stadio Olimpico to seal their place in the knockout stages at the expense of the Italian side.
United boss Louis van Gaal has long since been an admirer of Strootman having managed the Dutch midfielder at international level.
The Reds will seek assurances over the Roma man's fitness before making any official move, as the player continues his recovery from a serious knee injury.
Kramer deal in place
The Reds will do battle with Real Madrid for German World Cup winner Christoph Kramer, reports talkSPORT.Borussia Monchengladbach's 23-year-old midfielder would be available at a cut price of £8million, falling well within Louis van Gaal's budget.
United face competition from Los Blancos though, as the reigning European champions look for a player to shore up their midfield.
The Whites lost Xabi Alonso to Bayern Munich in the summer, while Sami Khedira has suffered with persistent injuries this season.
