Katy Perry’s half-time Super Bowl performance didn’t ‘Roar’ as loud as expected

The ‘Fireworks’ singer’s half-time show didn’t offer much to viewers watching this year's big game.

Singer Katy Perry performs during the Pepsi Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show at University of Phoenix Stadium on February 2015.
The dream singer of the peaches-and-cream set headlined the ultimate beer and wings throwdown.

Katy Perry may be the girliest performer — with a younger-than-usual fan base — to ever command the halftime stage. Then again, this year the NFL has been dogged by stories of domestic abuse on the part of its players. So, the organization's casting of this particular star could be read as a face-saving outreach to women.
Perry has long been a self-declared cheerleader for female empowerment. She underscored that Sunday by performing hits like “Roar” and “Firework,” which both sky write their messages of selfassertion.
If it wasn’t clear, she rode across the sky on a flaming star, prompting some wags to joke that it looked like “The More You Know” public service ad.
The star did make a few attempts to broaden her target demo. Guest star Lenny Kravitz brought a suggestion of classic rock, but he only made a brief cameo on Perry’s bisexual tease “I Kissed a Girl.” Leaks ruined what was supposed to be the show’s “surprise” guest: Missy Elliott. At least the missing-in-action rapper got to slam through her innovative hip-hop hits like “Work It” and “Get Your Freak On.”

Perry’s costumes, designed by Jeremy Scott, mined her usual technicolor image. She sported a flirty beach outfit, a star-spangled floor-length dress and an unflattering get up that made her look like she was on fire.

The show’s most theatrical moves — which had Perry riding a metallic tiger for an entrance, and flying around the stadium on a shooting star for a final — looked like something Disney might dream up on a bad day. In other words, Perry’s performance didn’t offer much for anyone other than wee ones searching for a big sister.
Earlier in the evening, Idina Menzel took a rare, and daring, a capella take on “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Unfortunately, Menzel’s voice isn’t beautiful. As usual, the Broadway star brought a more angular tone to her take. She could have used more sweet to balance out the tart.
Afterward, Perry showed off a fresh tattoo via Instagram.
“I thought it would be appropriate to draw blood tonight... XLIX,” she wrote.
Inside her right finger are inscribed the digits XLIX. Whether or not Perry’s performance stands the test of time, she now has at least one permanent memento from the big game.
