The Walking Dead's Danai Gurira Promises a 'Riveting and Gut-Wrenching' Season 6

"It's an amazing season," Gurira tells PEOPLE of season 6, which premieres Sunday on AMC. "It's very rich and deep and full of everything you can imagine."

Season 5 ended last spring with disharmony between the show's core group of survivors and the other residents of their adopted home of Alexandria, and Gurira says it has been a blast seeing how that drama plays out in the new season.

"We are working really, really hard and the scripts are riveting and gut-wrenching," says the actress. "It's powerful storytelling that we get to work on every day. It's powerful stuff that's coming out of the writer's room."
