Peter
answered, “Lord, if it is you, order me to come to you on the water.”
Jesus said, “Come!” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water
toward Jesus.” Matthew 14:28, 29
First
insight – Walking on water has nothing to do with water. The water is a
side issue. The real issue has to do with words – God’s words. Peter
did not actually walk on the water. He walked on the word of God,
specifically the word “Come” that Jesus spoke to him. He – walked on the Word – on the water. Within that word from God resided all the miracle-working power necessary for him to do it. When he received that word, he received the ability. Before he received that word, he could never have done it.
It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. John 6:63
Second
insight – Receiving Jesus’ word to ‘Come’ walk on the water is not
enough. For it to work, you will have to throw your leg over the side of
the boat and start walking. Faith, the Bible says, ‘without
corresponding actions is dead and lifeless.’ By getting out of the boat,
he activated the resident power in the word and it became alive, and
began to work. Peter was walking on the living and active word of God.
But
are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without
works (corresponding actions) is useless (unproductive)? James 2:20
Take
away – How are you to walk on your own watery situations in life? By
listening to Jesus and doing exactly what He says. If you do, you will
experience the miraculous power of God in your life. If you do not, you
will not experience the miraculous power of God in your life. It is that
simple. In other words, if you do not hear and obey God’s word, get
ready to stay in the boat with the rest of the unbelievers and doubters.
