Smiling broadly, the Queen looked
thrilled to be leaving hospital today after suffering a nasty sickness
bug.
The monarch, 86, was discharged at 3pm, just 24 hours after
being admitted with gastroenteritis.
Dressed in a bright scarlet
coat, she said goodbye to staff, including a nurse who curtseyed to her,
before being whisked away to Buckingham Palace in a waiting limousine
to rest.
She had earlier been visited by the royal doctor,
Professor John Cunningham, and aides said she was in “good spirits”.
A
statement added: “The Queen has left The King Edward VII’s hospital
having been admitted briefly as part of the assessment of symptoms of
gastroenteritis.”
It was her first hospital stay in 10 years, but
she was determined to avoid any fuss and had no family visitors during
her stay. Queen Elizabeth II leaves the King Edward VII hospital

But despite her speedy release, concerns about the Queen’s health
remain and her engagements have been cancelled until the end of this
week at least.
She has been forced to pull out of a trip to Rome
to meet Italian President Giorgio Napolitano on Wednesday.
And
aides said it was “too early to say” whether she would miss engagements
next week as well, including an appearance as guest of honour at the
Commonwealth Observance multi-faith service at Westminster Abbey on
Monday.
The Queen carried out 425 engagements last year and her
stint in hospital has raised suggestions Prince William, Kate and Harry
will soon be encouraged to commit to more engagements.
But it was
expected to be business as usual for Prince Philip, 91, tonight, who is
due at a dinner in London’s Knightsbridge as an honorary member of the
Imperial Poona Yacht Club.
Their daughter, Princess Anne, also continued with her public duties,
attending the Society of Head Teachers Annual Conference at The Vale
Resort, in Pontyclun, Glamorgan.
And the pregnant Duchess of
Cambridge, who was treated at the same Central London hospital when she
suffered her severe bout of morning sickness, is due to spend the day in
Grimsby tomorrow.
The Queen was struck with the bug on Friday
night, but failed to improve and went to hospital on Sunday as a
precaution.
Gastroenteritis, which causes vomiting and diarrhoea,
can be serious in older people if not treated quickly and one of the
main worries is dehydration.
Experts said yesterday doctors would
have wanted to get the Queen to hospital so she had access to a drip for
extra fluids.
