Agony: Wilshere lays on the ground after suffering the injury
Jack Wilshere is on course to return from injury on time, despite reports to the contrary.
Wilshere suffered an ankle injury in last month's defeat to Manchester United, and the original prognosis suggested he would be out until February.
Reports
emerged on Monday morning that the England midfielder had suffered a
setback and could be on the sidelines until March, but Press Association
Sport understand this is not the case. The 22-year-old
underwent surgery on the problem on November 27, five days after he
sustained the injury, and an Arsenal statement at the time read: "Jack
Wilshere has had successful surgery on his left ankle and will be out
for approximately three months. In pictures: Arsenal vs Manchester United VIEW GALLERY
"An assessment with a specialist confirmed the need for an operation
and the 22-year-old had successful surgery to his ankle in London on
Thursday afternoon."
The news means Wilshere should be back in
time to play a part in Arsenal's last 16 Champions League tie, and
possibly a potential FA Cup 5th round game the weekend before.
However, the North London derby against Spurs on February 7 will probably come too soon.
Providing he doesn't suffer a setback or further injury, the problem will not rule Wilshere out of any international action.
England's
next game is at Wembley on March 27, against Lithuania in a European
qualifier. The Three Lions then travel to Italy for a friendly on March
31.
