MLS Cup: Robbie Keane saves the day to give Landon Donovan perfect LA Galaxy send-off
The former Spurs striker scored an extra-time winner to land the California franchise their fifth MLS Cup with a 2-1 victory over New England Revolution
Robbie Keane was the hero as LA Galaxy won their fifth MLS Cup with a 2-1 victory over New England Revolution.
The Galaxy needed extra time to secure the silverware, in what was USA legend Landon Donovan's final game.
The 32-year-old has now hung up his boots, and goes out a champion thanks to Keane's 111th minute strike.
The teams were tied at 1-1 heading into the extra period, before the Irishman latched on to a long ball over the top of the Revolution defence to score, and celebrate, in vintage Keane fashion.
LA had taken the lead seven minutes into the second half when Gyasi Zardes brought down a cross to the back post to lash into the back of the net.
The game became stretched as New England searched for the equaliser,
but the Galaxy couldn't find the second goal to kill the match off, and
were punished 11 minutes from time.
Patrick Mullins ran down the left and cut the ball back for substitute and boyhood Revs fan Chris Tierney who was on hand to slot home and take the game into extra time.
The final seemed to be heading for penalties after a scoreless first period of extra time, before Keane struck to seal the title for LA. New England threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Galaxy goal in the final stages, but couldn't find the equaliser.
It was the fifth final that New England have lost.
