To determine the happiest companies to work for each year, fulfillment-focused job search site CareerBliss reviews
eight factors that impact professional happiness, including work-life
balance, an employee’s relationship with his or her boss and co-workers,
office environment, job resources, compensation, opportunities for
professional development, and company culture. How much emphasis
employees place on each factor is taken into consideration as well.

This year’s list of the 50 Happiest Companies In America for 2015 is based on thousands of independent company reviews by employees, reported to CareerBliss between 2013 and 2014.
“Each year, CareerBliss evaluates the companies dedicated to creating happier work environments,” said Heidi Golledge, CEO of CareerBliss. “As we evaluate the factors that impact happiness such as growth opportunity and company culture, it is also important to understand what type of industries are creating happier work environments overall. This year, we saw a surge of STEM-related companies (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) rank in the top 10.”
Topping the list this year is Johnson & Johnson JNJ -0.73%. The medical device, pharmaceutical, and consumer packaged goods company boasts an average salary of $70,000 per year and currently has more than 1,500 job openings listed on CareerBliss. Next up is California-based semiconductor company Broadcom BRCM +2.52%, which offers an even-higher average salary than Johnson & Johnson, $85,000 per year.

While it’s important to note that the vast majority of companies on this list offer healthy average salaries well over $50,000 per year, the fact that the company in first place does not offer the highest average salary on the list further indicates that compensation is not always the most significant element of employee happiness.
“Not only do these industries pay well,” said CareerBliss advisor and workplace psychologist Bradley Brummel, “but employees in STEM-related companies are happier in these jobs overall.”
“This may reflect the positive features in the type of jobs these companies offer, but it also might reflect the fact that employees with these skills have lots of choices of whom to work for…companies have to keep them happy to keep them at the company.”
Further down the list, search giant Google GOOGL +0.22%, with an average annual salary of $70,000, makes the leap from its previous spot in 21st place to number six. Moving in the opposite direction, Apple AAPL -0.5% drops from number fourteen to last place, ranking 50th for 2015. Pfizer, which earned first place last year, dropped out of the top 50 entirely. Accenture, meanwhile, holds the line, maintaining 23rd place, which it also held in 2014.
“It is important to see how workplaces are constantly evolving and changing,” said Golledge. “Creating happiness at work is a very fluid process, building and adapting to a changing workforce, while accounting for the key factors that create happier environments.”
