Monty Oum, gaming animator, dies aged 33

Tributes pour in for the creator of Haloid and the Dead Fantasy series, who suffered a fatal allergic reaction

Monty Oum, an adored animator within the online gaming community, has died after suffering from a
severe allergic reaction. He was 33.
Oum was employed by Rooster Teeth, a production studio famed for its creation of the comic science fiction web serues, Red vs Blue, for which he was one of the writers. However, he initially won a loyal following by creating his own gaming fan movies, such as Haloid in 2007 and his Dead Fantasy series, which mashed up tropes and characters from popular games. He also helped to animate video games such as Afro Samurai.
Oum was admitted to hospital over the weekend, according to an update on Rooster Teeth by his colleague Burnie. A fund was established to help raise money for Oum's medical expenses. At the time of writing, more than $218,000 had been contributed.
Burnie paid tribute to Oum, writing: "Monty is a tremendous talent who has accomplished so much in his young life. He has an amazing creative ability and the drive to put it to use."
On Monday afternoon, a new update on Rooster Teeth stated that Oum has died on Sunday. It explained: "10 days ago Monty suffered a severe allergic reaction during a simple medical procedure that left him in a coma. Although he fought bravely, his body was not able to recover. During his time in the hospital he was well cared for and never in pain at any time."
It added: "We were so proud to be a part of his life and we will miss him greatly." The website urged that fans honour Oum's memory by "simply doing something creative. Use your imagination to make the world a better place in any way that you can. If you know Monty like we do, then you know he would certainly be doing that if he were able to."
Members of the gaming community have been paying tribute to Oum on social media by posting artwork, tributes and photographs.
Oum is survived by his wife Sheena, his father Mony, and six siblings.
