LVG defends leaving Falcao out
Louis van Gaal defended his decision to axe Radamel Falcao – despite Manchester United losing and failing to muster a single shot on target. The £44million striker was controversially left out of United’s 18-man squad as Southampton stunned United by recording their first win at Old Trafford since January 1988.
Substitute Dusan Tadic plundered the 69th-minute goal that saw Ronald Koeman’s side beat United and go above them into third place in the Premier League table.
But it was the surprise omission of loanee Falcao – who will cost United £43.2m should they make his deal permanent this summer – that saw Van Gaal come under scrutiny.

Rooney: We didn't deserve to lose
Wayne Rooney believes that Manchester United did not deserve to lose 1-0 against Southampton at Old Trafford and made the better of the chances. Both teams defended well for the most part and Dusan Tadic's 69th-minute winner was the only shot of the game to hit the target.
Despite the relative lack of clear-cut chances and the failure by United to test Fraser Forster, the England striker believes that the hosts did enough to win the game.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, he said: "That's football, that's how it goes. I think we deserved to win the game today."
